Mary Lou Shanks

December 14, 1925 — March 4, 2015

Mary Lou Shanks age 89, of Pine Island died on Wednesday, March 04, 2015 at the Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Pine Island with Pastor Carolyn Westlake officiating. Inurnment will be in Pine Island Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 6, 2015 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM and on Saturday for one hour prior to the service, all at the church.
Mary Lou Owen was born on December 14, 1925 in New Haven Township, Olmsted County, MN to James A. and Lula E. (nee Cooke) Owen. She grew up on the family farm, attended country school and Pine Island High School. On July 22, 1944 she married Harold L. Shanks at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Pine Island. They made their home in Pine Island. Mary worked at Owen's Locker Plant, waitressed at the Rainbow Café, did daycare in her home and in her later years worked at the Mahler Funeral Home. Mary was active in the community and volunteered at the Pine Haven Care Center, Pine Island Area Home Services, Reach for Recovery, delivering Meals on Wheels, working bingo at the American Legion and being active in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts with her sons. Mary was also an active member of the United Methodist Church in Pine Island and belonged to its circles. Mary enjoyed cooking, crocheting, playing bingo, reading and was an avid MN Twins and Vikings fan.
Mary is survived by her children, David (Betty) Shanks of Pine Island, Judy (Barry) Youngberg of Ham Lake, Ed (Jane) Shanks of Monticello, Barb (Rich) Hagens of Sun Prairie, WI, Jerry (Nancy) Shanks of Rosemount, Carle (Cheryl) Shanks of Coon Rapids, Jody (Brian) Krause of Pine Island, Amy Cogswell of Sacramento, CA and John Shanks of Sun Prairie, WI; twenty grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren and sister, Ruthie Exner of Red Wing.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Harold and six brothers, Cliff, Carl, Harland, Lyell, Tom and Robert Owen.
