Mary Carol Nelson

Mary Carol Nelson, 74, of Mazeppa, died on Tuesday, April 28, 2020, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Marys Campus in Rochester. She was born in Barnum, MN, on April 4, 1946, to Carl and Orpha (Weber) Nelson. She was the second youngest of ten children who worked hard on the family farm. She graduated from high school and took courses at a local community college. She worked at IBM for 25 years. Mary was united in marriage to Steven Edward Chestnut and together they had two children, Brian and Scott. In 1972, Steven passed away leaving Mary a young widow. She was united in marriage to Alvin Nelson and became a step-mother to Cheryl. Alvin and Mary also had a daughter, Holly. Mary loved nature, flowers, birds, bowling, and horses. She enjoyed riding her horse, Smokey, for many years. She will be remembered for her fantastic brownies,her strong work ethic. She was also very independent and did things her way.
She is survived by her three children, Brian Chestnut, Scott Chestnut, and Holly (Joshua) Larson; step-daughter, Cheryl (Mark) Hansen; grandchildren, Remmy (Madalyn), Abigail, Lydia, Daniel (Amanda), Robert, and John; great- grandchildren, Kayla and Clara Johnson; brothers, Eugene, William, and Richard; and sisters, Gloria and Mitzi. She was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Orpha Nelson; her husbands, Steven Chestnut and Alvin Nelson; sisters, Alice, Laureen, Marjorie; and brother, Marvin.


A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 13 at 11:00 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Zumbrota. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service. Afterwards we plan on serving a light lunch.
