Mary Catherine (Hugstad) Monson died on November 25, 2020 in Scottsdale, AZ. Mary was born on July 31,1932 to Alfred John Hugstad and Elsie Marie (Lonergan) Hugstad. Mary was very active in her school and graduated from Zumbrota High School, Class of 1950, Zumbrota, MN. She worked for her father as a bookkeeper at his creamery before getting married. On September 25, 1954 Mary and Robert Monson were married at United Redeemer Lutheran Church in Zumbrota, MN. Robert and Mary lived in Zumbrota for 12 years where they began their family. In 1966, they moved to Red Wing where they continued to raise their three children and built Monson Trucking, Inc. In 1982, Mary and Robert moved to Duluth, MN coinciding with the relocation of their corporate office to Duluth. They worked very well together as a team, both at work and at home, and this was obvious in their 65+ years of marriage. They enjoyed living on Lake Superior and made many good friends in Duluth. As retirement approached, they built their first home in Scottsdale, AZ. After a number of years of being “snowbirds”, they decided to make Arizona their permanent home. Mary was very active in her church and did a lot of volunteer work. She was always willing to help out even when she was “volunteered” by her kids. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife and mother; a very involved and loving grandmother and great-grandma! Mary is survived by her son Mark (Kristi) Monson of Jasper, TN, daughter Carrie (Roger) Huppert of Scottsdale, AZ; granddaughters Melissa (Johnny) Kim of Franklin, TN, Megan (Alex) Licano of Phoenix, AZ and Jessica France (Travis Birge) of Franklin, TN; four great-grandchildren, Everett & Ella Kim and Lexi & Brantley Licano; sister Martha Hoven of Two Harbors, MN, brother Paul (Wendy) Hugstad of Irvine, CA; sister-in-law Val Hugstad of Laguna Woods, CA, brother-in-law Donald Monson; several wonderful nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers David Hugstad and James Hugstad; brother-in-law David Hoven, son Michael Monson and most recently, her loving husband Robert. Burial will be at the Zumbrota Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Online condolences are welcome and may be written at mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
