Mary Gwen Owen Swanson MacLeod

Mary Gwen Owen Swanson MacLeod, age 68, of River Falls, WI, passed away August 11, 2008 at United Hospital in St. Paul, MN. Mary was born on April 7, 1940, in Red Wing, MN, the daughter of Edward Swanson and Mary Gwen Owen Swanson. She grew up in Hager City, WI, and attended the Villa Maria in Frontenac, MN. Over the years she was known as Gwennie, Mary Gwen, MG, Mary, Ms. Mac, and Mom. She attended Macalester College, and received her undergraduate and master's degrees in Education from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls.
She taught for over 30 years at the River Falls Jr. and Sr. High Schools. She organized and directed the Group Readers, a choral reading group, for many years. She loved debating the differences between finished and done. She introduced students of all ages to Shakespeare, creative writing, mythology, and life. Mary loved to travel and led many mis-adventures. Many will remember her red pick-up truck caked with the red mud of Lake Superior's south shore or the red dust of Madeline Island. She visited such exotic places as the Amazon Rain forest, Ireland, and 100-mile Garage Sale along the Great River Road. Mary loved theater and movies. She was an avid reader, and could always be found with a book. Mary loved all wild things; deer, turkey's, "the Birds", (raccoons not so much) two sons, and 9th graders.
Mary is survived by her sons Ted (Julie) MacLeod of Minneapolis and Franklin MacLeod of Minneapolis; grandchildren Eleanor and Henry MacLeod; ex husband and lifelong friend Bob MacLeod of Naples, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents Eddie Swanson and Mary Gwen Owen.
A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Christ Episcopal Church, 321 West Avenue, Red Wing, MN, (651)388-0411 with Father Charles Uhlik officiating. Memorials preferred to the Future Museum Fund, at the Mississippi River Bluffs chapter of the Pierce County Historical Association. Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
