Mary E. Hulse, 92, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, December 26, 2023 at the Mayo Clinic - St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
She was born Mary Eleanor Jones in Minneapolis on February 21, 1931, to the parents of Frank and Flora (Hodson) Jones. On September 20, 1952, Mary married David Henry Hulse in a Presbyterian Church in East St. Paul, Minn. Mary and David have been members of the Presbyterian church from their baptism to the present.
After graduating from Johnson High School in St. Paul, Mary worked as an executive secretary to the manager of the Rothschild Department store in St. Paul. When Mary got married, she transitioned to working at the University of Minnesota’s Library where she worked as a secretary until their first son, Michael, was born in 1953.
In the fall 1953, the family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa before moving to Red Wing in January of 1960. There, Mary raised 4 boys in their Birchwood home. In 1968, after reupholstering a sofa for the treasurer of the Red Wing school system, Mary was asked by him to work part time as a secretary for the Red Wing High School. Mary eventually was asked to work full-time and spent her working years supporting both the Red Wing Junior High and High School. Mary retired in the spring 1988 after working 20 years for the school system.
Mary was an accomplished quilter, created beautiful needle work, restored and upholstered furniture. She loved making clothes for her grandchildren, was an avid reader, and spent time volunteering at the Senior Center.
In Mary’s and David’s retirement years they enjoyed many travels visiting countries such as Russia, Peru, Japan, China, and Belgium.
Mary is survived by her husband of 71 years David Hulse, 4 children Mike Hulse, Bob (Betty) Hulse, Dan Hulse, and Rick (Christine) Hulse; 8 grandchildren, Kendrick (Nick), Devyn, Liliya, Nickolas, Katy (Nick), Dylan, Aaron, and Bryan; 3 great grandchildren, Gwen, Charlee, Chance; and her sister, Catherine Grimseth.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 2, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Casey vanderBent officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church. Burial at Wacouta Cemetery. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
