ROCHESTER - Mary Helland, age 81, of Rochester, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015 at Golden Living Center West in Rochester.
Mary Hess was born Jan. 8, 1934 on the family farm in Winona, Minnesota to William and Laura (Yerke) Hess. She was raised on the family farm and attended Pumpkin Hollow Country School. She moved to Faribault, MN and worked for Jostens in Owatonna, MN. On June 25, 1955 she married Elmer Helland at Trinity Lutheran Church in Faribault. The couple made their home in Rochester where Elmer worked for IBM, and Mary was a homemaker. They moved to Byron, MN in 1960. Elmer died on Nov. 21, 2000. Mary moved to Rochester in 2001. She was a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church in Byron where she was active in the choir and Women's Circles. Mary enjoyed flower gardening and shopping.
Survivors include four sons, Mark (Tami) of Cumming, GA; Bob (Jan), and Jeff, both of Rochester; and Pete (Tascha) of Oronoco, MN; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and special friend Dave Swanson of Mantorville, MN. Her parents, husband, and one brother, preceded her in death.
The memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at Christ Lutheran Church in Byron with Rev. Steve Rheingans officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015, at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel, and one hour before the service at the church. Mary will be buried with her husband at Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester.
