Mary Gludt age 70 formerly of Lake City, died on July 19, 2007 in Spa Creek Center, Annapolis, Maryland, of complications from Alzheimer's disease.

Mary Gludt was born March 21 1937, in Red Wing, Minnesota and raised in Lake City, MN, the oldest child of Howard and Rectina Gludt.
Mary graduated from Lake City HS in 1955 with honors, including the National Honor Society and the William Patton Award. Mary received the W.T. Grand endowed scholarship and a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from Macalester College in St.Paul, MN, in 1959, with minors in foreign languages, business and history. She was admitted to Pi Gamma Mu, a national honor society. Mary joined the staff of Senator McCarthy in July of 1959 and moved to Washington, DC. She left the Senate in 1964 to work for the State Department for several years, serving both on the staff of the U.S. Embassy in Austria and at the department headquarters in Washington, DC. She then returned to Senator McCarthy's office and remained there until the late 1960s when she returned to Minnesota to attend the University of Minnesota Law School. She received the Juris Doctor degree in 1972, becoming the first female attorney in Wabasha County. Mary was admitted to the bar in Minnesota, Washington. DC, and in Maryland. Upon her return to Washington, she worked for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, first in the Inspector General's Office, and later assigned to the Social Security Administration. In 1987, she graduated from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management Executive Seminar Center in Kings Point, NY. At the time of her retirement she was chief of the disabilities litigation branch.

Mary had a keen interest in sports and was particularly good at golf, which she played from high school on throughout her life. She also enjoyed skiing, hiking, including part of the Appalachian Trail in Maine and the Bright Angle Creek Trail in the Grand Canyon. She was an avid runner, finishing the Richmond Marathon, several Cherry Blossom 10 mile races and several Annapolis 10 mile races as well as running the Woman's Distance Festival events in all the suburban counties each year. Mary became interested in sailing and participated as crew in many Catboat regattas over the years. Mary was also a student of the Civil War and regularly traveled to battle field reenactments.

Mary is survived by several cousins and by her long time friend, David Bleil. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, John.

A Graveside Service will be held August 7th, 2007 at 11:00 am at Lakewood Cemetery in Lake City. Friends and family will gather at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel Lake City fallowing the graveside service.
