Martha Fay Erie

January 14, 1942 — December 29, 2016

Martha Fay JaQuay Erie of Vasa died on Friday, December 30, at The Gardens Cannon Falls. She fought a ten year struggle but succumbed to Alzeimers.
Martha was born on January 14,1942, to Paul and Geneva JaQuay in Missouri.
She earned a Master's Degree in Biology and a Master's Degree in Education at Moorehead in Kentucky and studied computer programming at Pittsburgh. She was a member of the Association of Experiential Education and the Green Party.
Charles Erie and Martha were married on December 20, 1985, at Bell Fonte PA.
Martha lived, taught, and worked in a menagerie of cities and states. She was restless to try new challenges, everything from teaching at the Woodstock Country School in Vermont; to managing a novelty hat store in Manhattan; to starting a computer business, Erie Restorations; to living in the Skinnerish Intentional Community, Julian Woods, in Pennsylvania. She taught in at least eight states.
Spiritually she chose many paths, carrying with her what she could fit with the next leg of her journey. Community was a word most dear to her. The Quaker Commune in Pittsburgh was part of that path.
Martha was a reader, journal writer, a daily hiker along the Belle Creek, and a gardener. And of course she loved the chickens. Her disease cut these joys short.
Survivors include her husband Charles; children, Mark Schafer of Lexington KY, Allegra Schafer (Bob) of Eau Claire WI; Mary Sequist (Spencer) of Provo UT; Ann (Truang) Tang of Seattle WA; and Chaila Erie of Austin TX; ten grandchildren; one great grandchild; sisters-in-law, Ruthann (Clifford) Nelson, Dianne (Charles) Dashow, and Joanne (Ron) Lindholm; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Geneva JaQuay; brothers, Paul, Bob, and Jack; 2 sisters, Winifred and Lois and three brothers-in-law, John, Andrew, and Eugene Erie.
A Celebration of Life will be held in April.
