Mark J. Smith

Mark Jeffery Smith, 65, of Mankato, died June 25, 2019 at the Mayo Health Systems in Mankato. He was born May 20, 1954 to Stanley and Joan (Rother) Smith in Lake City, Minnesota. Mark was born, the fourth of five children, with multiple health issues and was developmentally disabled. When Mark was 3-years-old, his mother passed away and his father had to fight to keep his family together. Despite his efforts, at the age of 6, Mark was institutionalized but was able to come home for visits. He lived for a time at the state hospital in Rochester and later one in Faribault. At both placed he was well liked and popular with the staff. Eventually he moved to the Harry Meyering Center in Mankato where he lived for the last 24 years. He was also employed by HMRC for several years before he retired in 2017. While he faced a lot of pain and suffering in his life, Mark also had many good times. His sense of humor and natural inclination to be happy kept him in good spirits and made him a joy to be around. He liked to tease his care givers and housemates but was always charming. He enjoyed going out for hamburgers or pizza with family and attending community events. He loved James Bond movies and a fan of Batman. Much of Mark's life was with his housemates and care givers and his wonderful personality was due, in part, to the love he received from them and his family is much appreciative.
He is survived by brother, Steven Smith and sister, Barbara Smith both of Minneapolis; nieces, nephews, other family and his friends.
He is preceded in death by brothers, Thomas and Richard Smith; and his parents.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel, Lake City with visitation one half hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Lake City. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Harry Meyering Center in Mankato.
