Funeral services for Mark “Smokey” Bartel will be held Tuesday September 28th at 2:00 PM at Dale Lutheran Church, rural Wanamingo. The Rev. Heather Culuris will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Larson Chapel, in Zumbrota, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Mr. Bartel, 58, of Zumbrota, died Wednesday September 22, 2021 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
Mark Eugene Bartel was born March 27, 1963 in Zumbrota, the son of Milton and Marcia (Quam) Bartel. Baptized and confirmed at Dale Lutheran Church, Mark was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Wanamingo High School with the Class of 1981. During his school years he began working at Webster’s, which eventually became Central Livestock, and his employment there continued for forty years. Smokey was known for greeting the farmers and buyers with a smile, and he always enjoyed visiting with them. He enjoyed playing Bean Bag with his friends and participated in Bean Bag tournaments. He liked hanging out at the VFW in Zumbrota, and he enjoyed watching football and baseball on TV.
He is survived by his parents, Milton and Marcia Bartel of rural Kenyon; brothers, Mike Bartel and Matt (Melisa) Bartel, both of rural Kenyon; sisters, Marie (Mike) Koop of rural Zumbrota, and Michelle (Jon) Nord of rural Ixonia, Wisconsin; six nephews; seven nieces; great nieces and nephews; and a host of aunts and uncles.
