Marjean "Jeanne" Stechmann

April 9, 1933 — July 23, 2017

Marjean Estelle "Jeanne" Stechmann, 84, of Red Wing, died Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing. She was born April 9, 1933, in Rochester to Alfred and Delphine (Jackson) Merseth. She graduated from Zumbrota High School in 1951 and then from the Minnesota School of Business. She started working as a secretary for Lutheran Brotherhood in the Twin Cities area in 1954 and continued working there for seven years. On February 28, 1959, she married Donald Stechmann at United Redeemer Lutheran Church in Zumbrota. With Don serving in the US Navy, they moved 19 times living on the US East and West Coasts and overseas. During the first 20 years of their married life, Jeanne spent time raising her family, took part in school activities with her children, was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, taught Sunday school, volunteered time at the Serviceman's Center in Minneapolis and delivered Meals on Wheels. She also acted as command's Ombudsman when Don was in Squadrons. In 1978, Jeanne was proud to become a Screener/Counselor with the Navy Drug and Alcohol Education Program. After retirement, she received her broker's license and sold real estate for 17 years. In 2003 they moved to Red Wing. She was an active member of United Lutheran Church. As a member of the Red Wing Lions Club, she received the Helen Keller Award and she and Don chaired the eyeglasses collection for a number of years. She enjoyed reading, doing puzzles and being with her family and friends. She was especially grateful for the close friendships she made in her book club, church circles, birthday club and senior center.

She is survived by her husband, Donald; one daughter Dana (Eric) Hansen of Tucson, Arizona and one son Erik (Marlisa) of Peach Tree City, Georgia; six grandchildren, Nicholas and Alexis Hansen, Cara, Dylan, Erin and Jacob Stechmann; one sister, Arlys (Lyle) Berg of Webster, South Dakota and one brother, Don Merseth of Zumbrota along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Kurt F. Stechmann.
