Marion D. Willers

Marion Dorothy Willers, age 89, of Lake City, passed away Sunday, May 8 2011 at the Lake City Nursing Home. She was born October 24, 1921 in Gilbert Valley to John and Fredericka (Wohlers) Plote. She attended country school until 8th grade, when she began helping farm families with household chores. In all she helped out 21 different families. She worked numerous jobs including waitressing at the Royal Café in Lake City, Nybo's Café in Red Wing, St. James Hotel in Red Wing, and Red Wing Shoe Factory during war time, and was a maid for the F.J. Karsten's in Minneapolis. She married Vernon Willers on September 20, 1950 at St. John's Lutheran Church. Later she became a cook at the Lake City Nursing Home until retiring in 1983. In 1990 she wrote the biography "The Brown Eyed Girl With the White Cotton Top". Marion was a Member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City, where she was a charter member of the St. John's Altar Guild and served as President for four years, also serving as President for the St. John's Missionary Society. She was a Secretary and Treasurer of the Martha Circle at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. She was a member and Past President of the Hill and Valley Birthday Club, Chairman of the Plote-Wohlers-Willers and Von Helmst reunions, life member of the Ladies Auxiliary Post 8729, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the 6th Infantry Division. Marion had a strong love for nature and enjoyed planting flowers and watching birds. She was also famous for her delicious apple pies and homemade chicken noodle soup. What Marion enjoyed the most was spending time with family and friends. Many lives were touched by her giving spirit.

She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Hassinger of Lake City; sister Dorothy (Donald) Schrader of New Hope; sister-in-law, Ethel Moyer; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon WIllers; parents; three brothers, Werner, Frederick, and LeRoy Plote; two sisters Melinda Heitman and Betty Jane Plote; an infant brother; nephew Richard Plote; two nieces, Debbie Schrader and Melissa McQuiston.

Funeral Service will be 2p.m. Thursday, May 12, at St. John's Lutheran Church with Reverend Daniel Kroll and Reverend Dennis Valleau officiating. Burial will take place at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Lake City. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 11 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel in Lake City and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
