Marie C. Shafer, age 96, a longtime resident of Red Wing, MN, passed away peacefully on June 24 at the Augustana Health Care Center in Apple Valley, MN.
She is survived by her sons, Joseph (Mary) of Lakeville, MN and William (Vicki) of Apple Valley, seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Bertha Baier; husband of 49 years, Lloyd L. Shafer; two brothers and one sister.
Marie was born July 5, 1914 in Eau Galle, Wisconsin, where she was one of four children of the Joseph and Bertha Baier family. She attended area schools and graduated from Durand High School in 1933. After graduation, she worked in the surrounding area meeting and marrying Lloyd L. Shafer in 1940. After the war, she and Lloyd moved to the Red Wing area where Marie became a homemaker and Lloyd a partner in Lloyd's Produce. They enjoyed 49 years of marriage before Lloyd passed away in 1989.
Marie was a long time member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church (Red Wing) volunteering her time and talents to many ladies' service groups. Over time, she became the family historian, able to weave together the generations of people she encountered over her nearly 100-year lifetime.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at the Church of the Risen Savior, 1501 E. County Rd. 42, Burnsville, MN 55306 with Father Gorman presiding. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. A private interment will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery
