Marie C. Schaefer, age 81, of Wanamingo, died suddenly on Wednesday, April 19, 2017. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 26 at 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo with Pastor Christopher Culuris officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Marie Carol Bjugan was born on February 9, 1936 to Harold and Cora (Shelstad) Bjugan in Merton Township, Steele County. She was raised in Wanamingo and graduated from Wanamingo High School in 1954. On May 29, 1955 Marie married Norman "Bud" Schaefer at Trinity Lutheran Church, they made their home in Wanamingo, where they raised their family and milked cows together. Marie also worked for Dr. Walters as a receptionist for 25 years before becoming an independent insurance agent and starting Schaefer Insurance. Over the years Marie and Bud were foster parents for crisis emergency foster children, many they still keep in contact with.
Marie was an active life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was the custodian for many years and participated in many bible studies. She was also a member of the Red Hatters, Wanamingo Senior Citizens and a card club with Bud for over 40 years.
Marie enjoyed serving God first and coffee second, baking and crafting with the grandkids, gardening, dancing, singing and being with family.
Marie is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Bud; daughter, Danielle (Scott) Malecha of Lonsdale; three sons, Jody (Mary) of Forest Lake, Monty (Randi) of Wanamingo, and Randy (Tracy) Schaefer of Wanamingo; 12 grandchildren, Mathew (Shannon), Joshua (Calie), Justin (Stephanie), Jacob (Natalie), Crystal, Jean Marie (Ryan), Holly (Coty), Chelsea (Chris), Adam (Megan), Tylor, Katelyn and Brandon; 16 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Lovey (Darrell) Nesseth, Harland (Mary Lou) Bjugan, Marvin (Carol) Bjugan, and Larry (Amy) Bjugan; foster daughter, Janelle (Dan) Dehner.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Cora Bjugan.
