Marie Jeanette Haverlandt

September 3, 1923 — April 14, 2012

Marie Jeanette Haverlandt, 88, of Red Wing, died Saturday, April 14, 2012 at St Marys Hospital in Rochester, surrounded by her family. She was born on September 3, 1923 in Omaha, Nebraska to Fred Lloyd Sweet and Frances (McCoskey) Sweet . She attended school in Red Wing graduating from Central High School in 1941. On May 5, 1945 she married Leroy "Pete" Haverlandt at Christ Church in Red Wing. After residing in Ellsworth for ten years, they moved to Red Wing in 1956. Her working years began early in Red Wing at various businesses starting at the A&W Root Beer Stand and later included Montgomery Wards. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church where she contributed by being on Altar Guild, baking tons of cakes for events, and many years of folding the weekly bulletins.
An avid gardener of both indoor and outdoor plants she also spent many hours at Oakwood Cemetery tending to the flowers of the many people she had known throughout her lifetime and even those she had never known. Indoor activities included jigsaw, crossword, and word puzzles and mastering of e-mail and exploring the internet to keep in touch with family and friends. The Minnesota Vikings and Twins have lost a fan who rarely missed a game on TV, and Marie prided herself with keeping current by memorizing the names and numbers of players each season. Her telephone line was always busy during Twins games as she and friend Delores Geiger critiqued or cheered them on.
Marie was a doting Grandma who delighted her grandchildren with countless packages of her homemade goodies. Keeping active even in her later years she continued to attend her monthly "Lunch Bunch" luncheons comprised of friends from high school days; and she was also a frequent member of the "round table" at Bev's Café and could be seen at Marie's Restaurant on "senior night."
Survivors include one son, Peter Haverlandt of Red Wing; one daughter, Ellen Stewart (Paul Hurley) of Bayfield, Wisconsin; three grandsons, Jasson Strapko (Melissa), Sam Strapko and Rob Stewart (Anya); two great grandchildren, Andrew Strapko and Adeline Marie Strapko special Red Wing relatives include Linda, Jim & Andy Niebeling and Phyllis Johnson along with numerous nieces and nephews and their families. She is preceded in death by her husband, Leroy "Pete" Haverlandt in 2004; two brothers, William Sweet and Baby Sweet and two sisters, Gertrude Johnson and Louise Bennefeld.
Funeral will be on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 1:30 PM at Christ Episcopal Church with Reverend Michael Way officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Golden Book of Memories or donor's choice.
