Marian Esther Garbisch, age 97, died Tuesday, February 18, 2014 in St. Paul, MN. She was born in Loretto, MN, September 16, 1916 to Charles and Emma (Biegert) Pieper. She graduated from Buffalo High School, and received a BS Degree in teaching from the University of Minnesota, where she became a lifelong member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Becoming the first woman in her Buffalo class to receive a college degree, she worked at General Mills, developing and testing recipes for the Betty Crocker Cookbook, and taught in Minneapolis and North Branch.
She married Kenneth Bruce Garbisch, on August 3, 1941, in Minneapolis, MN. The couple settled in Valley City, North Dakota, returning to Minneapolis during Ken's service in WWII. Settling in Austin, MN, after the war, the couple moved to Lake City in 1955, where she taught generations home economics at Lincoln High. Marian was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she was the first president of the Ladies Aid, and was most currently a member of Bethlehem Lutheran in Lakeville.
A woman of high standards and deep love of family, Marian enjoyed reading, flowers, hiking and cross country skiing, baking, quilting and sewing, travel, volunteering, and spending time with family and friends. She stressed art in everyday living, and graced her home with a sense of style and attention to detail.
Marian is survived by three daughters: Diane (Marvin) LeVake of Burnsville, MN, Linda (Stephen) Gammell of St. Paul, MN, Kimberly (Nate) Bremer of Reedsville, and a son Bruce (Lois) Garbisch of Cook; seven grandchildren, Anna Garbisch Sorenson, Andrew Garbisch, Naomi Garbisch Werner, Sean LeVake, Megan LeVake Mannie, Emma Bremer, Ethan Bremer, and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother Wilfred Pieper of Alexandria, Virginia, and one sister, Virginia (Gerald) Prigge of Apple Valley, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Kenneth; and brothers Clifford and Monte Pieper.
Please note the new service will be held Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 2:30 pm, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Lake City, MN. Visitation will be one hour before the service at church. Burial will be at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Fuenral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel.
