Marian A. Burkard, age 88 of Red Wing, died on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Fairview Red Wing Medical Center. She was born on August 17, 1921, the daughter of John and Emma (Boatman) Oelkers. She was raised on the family farm in rural Red Wing. On April 26, 1946, she married Calvin Burkard in Red Wing. Marian worked for the Red Wing School District Food Program for many years. While serving as supervisor for the Twin Bluff School Lunch Program she was nominated by her employees and received Red Wing's first Woman Boss of the Year Award. She was a lifelong bowler at Nybo's, she enjoyed camping, playing cards, cooking, and baking.
Marian is survived by her daughters Linda (Mike) Rehder of Red Wing and Kathy (Dick) Herron of Lake City; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Harry "Hap" Oelkers of Red Wing; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Calvin on July 20, 2005; brothers and sisters.
Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, October 9, 2009 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek with Reverend Lowell Sorenson officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren: Kim Vander Laan, Jeff and Mick Rehder, Rick, Joe and Dan Herron. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
