Lyle R. Berg

Lyle R. Berg, age 67, of Zumbrota died on Wednesday December 15, 2010 at his home. A memorial mass is scheduled for Monday December 20, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Zumbrota with Father Timothy Dolan officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Paul's Catholic Church Cemetery in Zumbrota. The visitation will be held from 2:00 until 5:00 PM on Sunday December 19 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and one hour prior to the mass at the church.
Lyle Richard Berg was born on April 14, 1943 in Rochester, MN to Bennie and Ruth (nee Best) Berg. He grew up in Pine Island and graduated from Pine Island High School in 1961. He attended the University of Minnesota for 2 years. On June 20, 1964 he entered the United States Navy. He served on the USS Bon Homme Richard from 1964 - 1966 off the Vietnam coast. On July 2, 1966 Lyle married Rose Ellis in Inglewood, CA. After his honorable discharge on August 22, 1966, they made Pine Island their home. He worked at IBM for sixteen years, first as a machinist, and later as a programmer. He later worked for Mayo Clinic as a program analyst and tech specialist for the Business Office. Lyle and Rosie moved to Zumbrota in 1980. After 23 years, Lyle retired from Mayo Clinic in 2007.
Lyle enjoyed anything outdoors in the summer, from doing yard work, golfing, and riding his Gold Wing. In the wintertime he enjoyed woodworking and planning summer trips. After retiring he also did volunteer work with the Habitat for Humanity Houses, the Pine Island History Center, and the Pine Island Senior Citizens Building. Lyle was a member the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Minnesota Patriot Guard and former member of the Zumbrota Lions Club.
Lyle is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Rose; two sons, Dean (Christina) Berg of Beverly, MA and Aaron Berg of Waconia; five grandchildren, Alexandra, Stella, Joe, Lilly, and Audrey Berg; two brothers, Ken (Karen) Berg of Racine and Gary (Margie) Berg of Pine Island and one sister, Darlene (David) Lucas of Rochester.
Honorary bearers are his grandchildren, Alexandra, Stella, Joe, Lilly and Audrey Berg.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Pine Island History Center Building Fund.
