Luverne M. Thompson

Luverne Melroy Thompson, 96, of Red Wing, died Monday, December 4, 2023, at his home at the Villa at St. Crispin’s, surrounded by his family.  He was born on November 16, 1927, in Zumbrota to Oscar and Martha (Kopang) Thompson.  He attended rural schools and then served in the US Army from 1946-1947.  Following his honorable discharge, he farmed with his family.  On September 8, 1956, he was united in marriage to Marilyn St. John at Vasa Lutheran Church.  He worked for Armour Packing Company in St. Paul for 15 years following their marriage and then farmed for many years in Hay Creek Township.  He and Marilyn also owned and operated Thompson Upholstery Shop.  He was a member of United Lutheran Church.  Luverne enjoyed farming, gardening and anything that was John Deere green.    He could always fix something and was often called the “cobbler”.   He had a special gift as a poet and wrote many poems.  Music was another of his favorite things and spending time with his family and friends was always a great highlight.

Luverne is survived by his wife, Marilyn of 67 years; one daughter, Theresa (Scott) Will of Red Wing; three grandchildren, Zachary (TaNesha) Will, Lauren (Steven) Strauss and Lydia Will all of Red Wing; four great grandchildren, William, Vivian, Greta and Walter and two on the way; one sister, Lois Wipperling of Red Wing and Mo (Donna) Thompson of Kansas and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Lynn Marie; three brothers, Elton, Oscar, Raymond and two sisters, Marilyn Carlson and Clarice Anderson.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, December 9, 2023, at United Lutheran Church.  Burial will be at the Vasa Lutheran Cemetery .  Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2023, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
