Lowell "Red" Thompson

August 26, 1926 — May 1, 2017

Lowell Lamont "Red" Thompson, age 90, was born August 26, 1926, in Rochester Minnesota, son of Gerry and Hazel Thompson, and died May 1, 2017, in Rochester Minnesota. He attended and graduated from the Rochester Public Schools in 1944. He was proud of his musical achievements playing saxophone with the Rochester High School Band 1938-1940, the Jim Smart Orchestra 1940-1942 and the 20th Century Club Orchestra 1942-1943.

He spent 2 years with the U S Army in the Philippine Islands and Kyoto Japan. After being honorably discharged as Technician 5 in November 1946, he came back to Rochester and spent time in the family-owned laundry business. He married Eunice Larson, daughter of Carl and Christine Larson, of Rochester in June 1947, and started a family.

He began working at the Kruse Lumber Company in 1947, where he completed an apprenticeship in cabinet making and worked for other area construction firms, including Weis Builders, from 1952 until 1961. He started his own woodworking firm, Cabinet Craft Inc, in 1961 and retired in 1983 - after 22 years of manufacturing all types of architectural woodwork items. In retirement, he also worked part-time with his son Jim and grandson Dustin at Thompson's Garage Door & Openers in Rochester.

He was a former president of Kiwanis Westside, first Vice President of Realife Cooperative and member of Zumbro Lutheran Church - all in Rochester MN.

Children: Kristine (Dick) Norland of Mankato MN, Nancy Davis of St Louis Park MN, Jill Thompson-Riese (Bruce Rolfsen) of Alexandria VA, Jim (Marcia) Thompson of Rochester MN.

Grandchildren: Matt (Emma) Norland, Mark (Vicky) Norland, Carl (Jill) Davis, Jamie (Matt) Ritchie, Stephanie (Kyle) Robinson, Dustin (Kayla) Thompson and 9 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents and brothers Guy, Paul, Eugene.

Visitation at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel on Friday, May 5 from 5:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m.
A Celebration of life will be held at Zumbro Lutheran Church Saturday, May 6 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jason Bryan-Wegner officiating. There will be a visitation one hour prior to service. A reception will be held immediately following the service. A graveside service will be held May 6, at 1:00 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Wm. T. McCoy Post #92 of the American Legion
