Louis Eugene Erie, Sr., 91, of Red Wing, died Monday, July 29, 2013 at the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Hospital. He was born on July 2, 1922, in Wanamingo to Jens and Olava (Finnie) Erie. He attended schools in Wanamingo. During World War II he served in the US Army Air Force from 1942-1946 where he was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines. In 1947 he married Grace Martinson and they later divorced. He worked many years for Erie Masonry before retiring in the 1990's. In February 1970 he married Darlene Hennen. He was a member of the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54, Burnson-Lillyblad VFW Post #1218, Red Wing Elks BPOE #845 and the Redman Club. He enjoyed bowling, playing pool, throwing horse shoes and most of all enjoyed tinkering. Since the early 1990's he has lived at Jordan Towers.
Survivors include four children, Michael (Roger) Erie, Linda (Gary) Millbach and Sheila (Tom) Early all of Prescott, Wis. and Louis (Edward) Erie, Jr. of Golden Valley; one step-son, Dennis (Inga) Omundsen of Biloxi, Miss.; four grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; one brother, Sanford Erie of Red Wing; one sister, Ione Irvin of Red Wing and long time friend and companion, Jan Carpenter of Red Wing along with nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, second wife, Darlene and former wife, Grace; four brothers and four sisters.
A visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. with 4 p.m. military honors by the Leo Peterson American Legion Post #54 on Friday, August 2, 2013 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Red Men Club with a light supper provided. Memorials are preferred to the family.
