Louis Cushing

Louis Willard Cushing, 83, Red Wing, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Fairview Red Wing Medical Center. He was born, as Lou would say, 7-27-27 at 7:27 p.m.in Wilson, WI, the son of James Willard and Esther (Stock) Cushing. He served in the U. S. Navy during WW II from May 25, 1945 to August 11, 1946. He married Alice DuBois on January 22, 1950 and she died in September, 1986. He married Phyllis Kivi on December 31, 1986. He worked at Red Wing Shoe Company from March 4, 1949 to August 1, 1989, retiring after 40 years. He was a past member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Frontenac where he served on the Church Council and taught Sunday School where he directed the Christmas programs and always there to help when needed. Presently he was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Red Wing. He was also a member of Frontenac Golf Course and enjoyed golfing and fishing. In his younger years he had his pilot's license and enjoyed to flying. He was a great Grandpa and loved to tease his grandkids.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Phyllis of Red Wing; three children: Randi (Mark) Hinds of Richardson, TX, Clayton Cushing of Trijillo, Peru and Brad (Sue) Cushing of Red Wing; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey (Kitty) Hinds, Heather Hinds, Daniel Hinds, Holly (Jason) Bennett, Kristine Dodge, Colleen (Ryan) Anderson, Haley Cushing, six great-grandchildren, Autumn Dodge, Wiley Dodge, Brennan Anderson, Alex, Andrew and Jack Hinds; six step-children: Marilyn (Jerry) Rankila, Janice (Bill) Langhans, Rodger (Sharry) Kivi, Roy Kivi, Leanne (Robert) Lind and Randy Kivi; fifteen step-grandchildren; eighteen step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice; two brothers, Robert and Emmet Cushing; three sisters; Lucille Olson, Elizabeth Stang and Joyce Rottier; one step-daughter, Karen Gusa, and twin infant granddaughters, Brianna and Braunwynn Cushing.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011 at St. John's Lutheran Church with Reverend Todd Engel officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dennis, Vance, Mike and James Cushing, Stephen Funk and Roy Kivi. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.
