Loa Margaret Hovel

April 13, 1923 — July 8, 2016

ROCHESTER - Loa Margaret Hovel (Tiedemann) died peacefully in Lodi, WI on Friday, July 8, 2016.
Our mother danced the polka on stage with the clown Bobby Walker of the KSTP David Stone's Barn Dance. Three years in a row the show was sponsored by Hovel's Hatchery, Purina Chows, at the Zumbrota High School Auditorium.
As a pioneer in radio in the late 1950's and early 1960's, opportunities led her to broadcast the "News from Zumbrota" on KDHL radio of Faribault, Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday mornings on the transmitter from the kitchen at 196 Mill Street, was uncovered and warmed up.
Many times in her later years she recalled with pride how she graduated from Lake City High School. Then the next year became the secretary for then superintendent D.D. Karow, as "everyone else seemed to be going to work in the California Defense Plants". Loa waited for Morris Hovel to come back from his 5 year tour of duty in the China, Burma, and Lido road jungles to be married in 1946.
As secretary and partner in Hovel's Hatchery they featured area farmers in early morning broadcasts with radios tuned in at various barns during milking time. KSTP live television at noon featured many area farmers in the St. Paul studio, sponsored by Purina Chows and presented by Hovel's Hatchery, Feed and Seed. Loa organized a pet parade down main street in Zumbrota with police chief Clarence Benson directing traffic. Karl Zipp was dressed as a clown in a "Checker Board" suit made by Loa. Iver Shay's Dalmatian (Spotty) climbed a wooden extension ladder to the top of the lumber yard and then walked down again to the cheers of the crowd.
During the Zumbrota Centennial of 1956 she co-founded the "Sisters of the Swish", during the parade she played a "Honky-Tonk" piano with the Women's Jug Band from the back of an International Harvester flatbed truck. She also did time as a Cub Scout Pack Leader. Loa rode the Avon collectable craze as a Rochester Avon Lady. She won numerous monthly sales awards and frugally saved enough to pay for round-trip tickets for the family to Norway in 1971. Through her efforts, family ties in Norway were once again connected after World War II.
Many hours were spent with the Rochester Garden Club and had many enjoyable social times with its members. Mildred Hovel and Doreen Tiedemann were close family friends along with Mary Sorem and members of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and Choir.
Preceded in death by parents Margaret and Alfred Tiedemann, and brothers Hank and Ralph. Her husband and soulmate Morris, his brothers and sisters Alfred, Harold, Elmer, Lawrence, Lillian and Marion. She is survived by sister-in-law Gail Hovel of Cannon Falls, MN. Loa's two sons Dan (Margaret) of Byron, MN, her two grandsons Matthew (Dianna) of Florida, and Christopher of Minneapolis, MN, and son Steve (Arlene), and daughter-in-law Rachel Millar of Lodi, WI, where she spent her final 20 months. Many cousins and friends in the Midwest and Norway.
The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Rochester with Pastor Charles Ortloff officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery next to Morris. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel, and one hour before the service at the church.
