Linda Rose Mathen Walters, age 89, of Rochester, passed away Monday June 26, 2017 at her home at Shorewood Commons. She was preceded in death by her husband Emery, who died June 25, 2016, after 66 years of marriage, and her son Stephen in 1994. Survivors include her son David (Chris) of Rochester; her grandson Jacob, 3 granddaughters Heather, Samantha, and Bailey. 3 sisters Joan Sonnenberg and Harriet Flory both of California. Lorraine Bass of Rochester and brother Richard Mathen of Florida, and sister-in-law Betty Walters of Rochester along with many nieces and nephews.
"I was born on Aug. 1, 1927 to my parents William Henry and Johannah (Schellin) Mathen in Rochester. I was baptized on Aug. 25, 1927, and confirmed in April 1941. I attended all 8 grades at Trinity Lutheran School and graduated from Rochester High School in 1945. On Oct. 29, 1949 I married Emery Bruce Walters at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rochester. I worked as a florist for my parents at Esther's Flower Shop, the city clerks office, the public utilities office, and retired from Willow Creek Middle School as a secretary to the librarian in 1986. In 1962, we were charter members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church until joining Redeemer Lutheran Church in 2001. I participated in Bible studies, LWML, circles, alter guild, Kennedy Evangelism Course, and volunteer work packing medical supplies for the Orphan Grain Train Organization. I list these activities not to boast, but to share with you how the Holy Spirit helped my faith to grow. I want to share for the final time the gospel message so that those who are reading this will know that their salvation has been paid for through Jesus Christ when He died on the cross for the forgiveness of their sins and mine. His resurrection on Easter morning is our guarantee that we too will rise again with Him as our body and soul will reunite on that final day when all God's children will be with him eternally."
The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 869 7 Ave. S.E., with Rev. Adam Koglin officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church. A reception will be held at the church following the burial. Memorials are suggested to Redeemer Lutheran Church, Seasons Hospice, or to the charity of your choice.
