Linda Elizabeth Curtis

December 31, 1941 — May 31, 2018

Linda Elizabeth Loughmiller Curtis, 76, of Rochester, died Thursday, May 31 at Seasons Hospice.

Linda was born in 1941 to Rodney and Mary (Sardou) Loughmiller in Topeka, KS. During her time as a student at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS, Linda served as the President of the Student Teachers Association for the State of Kansas and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega social sorority, where she established what would become lifelong friendships. Linda earned degrees in mathematics and education and graduated a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the international professional organization for educators. After graduation, she taught school in Topeka.

In 1963, Linda married fellow K-State alum Terry Curtis. The couple migrated north to Rochester, where Linda established herself in the community as a math teacher, Sunday school teacher, and active member of Christ United Methodist Church. Together, Linda and Terry raised four compassionate boys.

Linda devoted much of her life to helping others. She served within the United Methodist Women, the American Association of University Women in Rochester, Rochester Civic Theatre, and the State Hospital. During the 1970s and 80s, she assisted Southeast Asian immigrants as they settled into the community. Christmas Anonymous was near and dear to Linda's heart; for over half of her 40 years' involvement with it, she served as either President or Treasurer, and at one time or another, each of her family members became de facto volunteers.

Perhaps the service Linda was most closely associated with was Saturday Noon Meals at Christ United Methodist Church. In 1994, Linda saw a void in our community-no organization served free meals to people in need on weekends-and became part of a team of leaders who decided to fill it. So began sit-down meals every Saturday at noon, staffed by volunteers and served family-style to guests. Through her many years of overseeing Saturday Noon Meals, Linda operated under the belief that if you treat people with respect, they'll treat you with respect.

In addition to cheering from the sidelines at her boys' and grandkids' games, Linda was a lifelong KU basketball fan. After raising her sons, she never stopped cooking for a crew.

Linda is survived by her husband of 54 years, Terry Curtis; her sons Scott Curtis, Todd (Sharon) Curtis, Gregg (Ann Kempke) Curtis, and Brett (Chantell) Curtis; grandchildren Will, Kate, Leo, Tayla, Jordan, and Jayden; and sisters Jean Ann (Shelby) Buchanan of Topeka, KS, and Gayle (Don) Highley of Springfield, IL. Linda is preceded in death by her parents, Rodney and Mary Loughmiller.

A service to celebrate Linda's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 23 at Christ United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Saturday Noon Meals (Christ United Methodist Church) or Channel One Regional Food Bank.
