Lewis E. Powers

March 13, 1924 — January 15, 2015

Lewis E. Powers, 90 of Bay City, died after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at his home, surrounded by family. He was born in Red Wing, MN to Elmer and Effie (Sanborn) Powers on March 13, 1924. The family later moved to rural Maiden Rock and he graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1941. He enlisted in the Army during World War II.
Lewis married Phyllis Rose Ann Young on May 10, 1947 at the Spring Garden Lutheran Church in rural Cannon Falls. They lived on and operated a dairy farm in Hartland Township until 1972. Lewis and Rose Ann raised 8 children to whom he taught many life lessons and a love of reading and music. When they moved off the farm, his off farm work included Marigold Foods and Pierce Pepin Electric Coop as a handyman until his retirement in 1991.

Lewis was a man of many good deeds. Many relatives and friends were the grateful recipients of updated, formerly retired appliances, courtesy of Lewis's garage and tools. He was a frequent donor at the Red Cross blood drives (about 320 pints) and a longtime member of the Ellsworth Ambulance crew. He and his wife helped with driving and delivery of the "Fare for All" food program for many years. In 1971 he donated a kidney to his youngest brother, Jim. His final gift was to donate his body to the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Lewis was a 50 year member of Ellsworth Legion Post #204 serving in various offices and on the firing squad. He was also very active at the Senior Center, participating in Tuesday Club and the Golden Agers and the Stone Agers singing groups. He was a founding member of the Pierce County Ecumenical Choir in which he sang for better than 30 years. He was a faithful member of the Hartland United Methodist Church for over 70 years, living next door for the last 42 of those years. He mowed the grass and cared for the grounds, as his father did before him, showing his love for Jesus in actions as well as words.

Survived by his wife of 67 years, Rose Ann, and six children: Bruce Powers, Nancy Olkjer, Brenda (Tim) Singer, Rita (Jon) Anderson, Leo (Kathy McCarthy) Powers and Amy Powers. Also survived by grandchildren Debbie (JD) Dahl, Beth (Joe) Silva, Ray (Patti) Omsberg, Lonnie (Shelly Aslakson) Larson, Stephanie (Korey Green) Powers , Kathy (Aaron Johnson) Powers , Candace Powers, Dan Powers, Liesl (Jake) Bailey, Jesse (Stephanie) Singer, Sam (Sara) Singer, Molly (Erik) Jensen, Noah (Samantha) Singer, Adam (Liz) Anderson, Laura (Adam) Hicks, Teresa (Jeff) Anderson, Caleb Powers, Joshua Powers, Isaac Powers, Andy Powers and Jacob Powers. 26 great grandchildren and 8 great- great grandchildren ( with 2 more to come).
