Leta Mae Suffern, 85, of Red Wing, died Saturday at Fairview Red Wing Medical Center. She was born on January 27, 1921 in Schuyler, Nebraska to Jack and Abbie (Conley) Smith. She attended Jefferson Elementary School and Central High School in Red Wing. She was married to Ardell Engel in 1941 and they later divorced. She married John Suffern in 1960 and he died in 1971. She was employed at various restaurants in Rochester and Plainview. For the past 20 years, she has lived in Red Wing. She was a resident of Jordan Towers, where she would check on other residents. She was a member of St. Paul?s Lutheran Church, Senior Citizens, and American Legion Auxiliary in Red Wing and did volunteer work, including Faith in Action. She enjoyed walking, reading, fishing, bowling and visiting with people. She also was very proud of her grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, William Engel and Richard Engel; special friend, Mary Hauger; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Elmer; an infant brother and one sister, Roberta Trulen and special friend Frank Cullen. Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Rev. Tom Lee officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday.
