Leslie M. Schultz

September 25, 1919 — November 15, 2014

Leslie Micheal Schultz, 95, of Red Wing, died Saturday, November 15, 2014, at Loving Residence in Red Wing, MN. He was born September 25, 1919 in Plum City, Wisconsin, to Albert and Elizabeth (Staehli) Schultz. He grew up and attended school in Red Wing and in 1934 was confirmed at
St. John's Lutheran Church, where he has been a life-time member.
How do you describe a quick witted humble man with curious twinkling blue eyes who had a skip in his step while humming a tune into his 90's?
Leslie, like many who grew up during the Great Depression, valued hard work, self reliance, saving for a rainy day and most of all, helping others. Whether it be a kettle of soup, grocery bags of food, a favorite candy, a movie and popcorn with a young nephew or a new bike, money or a car, or even a funeral. He found pleasure in giving and often stated, "I never lost anything I gave away."
Sometime in the 1920's the family moved from Wisconsin to Red Wing and rented a house at the end of 12th Street. When the rental house was sold, they were forced to move and Leslie's mother obtained three lots on Central Avenue and secured the building supplies for a small house. It was the summer of 1936, the hottest on record, when Leslie's older brother, Vaughn, and a couple of his friends dug the foundation by hand, while Leslie was away from home working as a farm hand. By today's standards the four room house was tiny but they were glad to have it. The house remained in the family for 75 years.
Prior to enlisting in the US Army on January 6, 1941, Les worked for the Hi-Park dairy. He served during world War II and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in the Aleutians campaign West of Alaska. He was honorably discharged from Battery C 417th Coast Artillery (antiaircraft) Battalion on January 14, 1945. When asked what it was like to go home after four years he said "I was gone so long I didn't know if I SHOULD go home."
He married Alberta Henn April 28, 1945 and they later divorced. They had a daughter,
Lynn Robin.
Leslie made his living as a grain inspector for the State of Minnesota ASA retiring in 1981 after 30 years of service. When asked how he came to be employed in such a way he replied emphatically, "the Lord got me that job." Originally hired as a grain sampler, his aptitude for detail, preciseness and record keeping must have been appreciated and he was offered the opportunity to study the field a few months in the Twin Cities. He was responsible to accurately grade grain, usually hauled by barge, and based on his testing the owner was paid accordingly.
Leslie was a member of the Leo C Peterson American Legion Post #54, Disabled American Veterans and St. John's Lutheran Church.
Among other things, Les enjoyed fishing, small motors, indoor gardening, collections of all sorts, music and traveling to Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula, Hawaii and Canada. His most recent trip was an Honor Flight in April to Washington DC to view the WWII memorial.
Leslie is survived by 2 sisters, Elizabeth Kutscheid of Red Wing and Eleanor (Lowell) Swanson of Rolling Stone; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Robin Schultz; two brothers, Glenn Schultz and Vaughn Schultz and special friend, Barbara Schmelzer.
