Leroy Ludwig Thiemann, 89, of Red Wing died Friday, October 30, at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls where he had resided for the past week. He was born on June 1, 1920 in Goodhue Township, Minnesota to Jacob and Laura (Diercks) Thiemann. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church rural Goodhue and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Goodhue. He attended rural schools and graduated in 1939 from Goodhue High School. He then took correspondence courses for radio and television. On June 28, 1944, he married Pearl Lane at the Episcopal Church in Wabasha. He worked for LaGrange Shoe Company as assistant to the cutting room foreman for 8 years, owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store for two years and then for over 30 years worked for Malmquist Home Furnishings. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Red Wing since 1945 where he served on the church council, was finance secretary of St. John's School, ushered for 20 years and sang in the choir. He also was the church Treasurer and St. John's Cemetery Treasurer. He was the first recording technician for the Lutheran Chapel of the Air radio broadcast. He enjoyed gardening, doing carpentry work, making rag rugs on a hand operated loom, going to flea markets to sell the rugs and traveling to Idaho and Oregon to visit relatives and friends, playing cards and reading
Survivors include two children, Leroy (Delores) Thiemann of Dayton, Minn., and Rosemary (Will) Burleigh of Cannon Falls; three grandchildren, Matthew, Angela and Daniel and three great grandchildren, Alexander, Emma and Jordan. He was preceded in death by his wife on December 17, 2004 and a stillborn brother.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, at St. John's Lutheran Church with Rev. Loren Lucht officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be for two hours prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to the church. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
