Leonard William Koser

Early Thursday morning, September 2nd, 2021, Leonard William Koser passed into the Lord’s loving arms surrounded by his wife and children. God blessed Leonard with wonderful medical staff at both OMC and Mayo; He was extremely touched by the nurses celebrating his birthday with him. He celebrated his 65th birthday with numerous phone calls from loved ones and surprise gifts from family.

Leonard was born in Cumberland, WI on August 25, 1956, to Walter and Leona (Cimfl) Koser. He was the 2nd youngest of seven children: James, Joan Meyer, Sally Gores, Charlotte Mattis, Jerry, and Laura Lindquist. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Leona, and his brother James.

He grew up on a family farm in Almena, WI and learned early the meaning of hard work, dedication, compassion, and love for the Lord. By five, he was given the responsibility of steering the tractor during planting season. Before and after school, Leonard recalled milking cows. In 1978, he graduated from River Falls University (WI) with a BS in Math and a minor in Computer Science. He worked at IBM’s site in Texas for 2 years, before returning to the site in Rochester, MN for the remainder of his 34 year career.

His passion for math lead him to having conversations with Patsy Meyer who on February 9, 1980, became his wife. They were blessed with five wonderful children: Benjamin (Jessica), Keith (Raquel), Jennifer (Benjamin), Adam, and Katrina (Dustyn). He was further blessed with 11 amazing grandchildren Vanessa, Dani, Devin, Kati, Alaina, Saleigha, Jazylnn, Landon, Makenna, Kiera, and Myla. Leonard loved animals; his compassion for them led him to bottle feeding goats, kittens, birds, rabbits, and even baby squirrels. He rescued geese from the IBM courtyard and helped turtles cross the road. He enjoyed going to county fairs to see the 4H exhibits, playing recreational basketball with coworkers and going on runs with the family huskies.

In his later years, he was often found listening to historical or biblical videos. He had a passion for learning and desired to learn more about woodworking. Being outside hiking, visiting the Boundary Waters, enjoying bonfires, bird watching, stargazing, and gardening were his favorite ways to enjoy God’s creation. He loved walking through the woods on their property in Oronoco and was able to identify plants at a glance. The deepest desire of his heart is for all to “work out their salvation with fear and trembling.” His love for God dominated his being. His final wish was for those he loved to develop or strengthen their personal relationships with Jesus. He always had a listening ear and strived to direct anyone going through a trial to turn the burden over to God for guidance, wisdom, and strength.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, September 8th, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Mahler Chapel in Pine Island, MN . Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, September 9th, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Rochester Chapel at 1624 37th Street NW, Rochester, MN. Burial will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Almena, WI. In lieu of flower memorials, please donate to Elwood and Brenda Nelson AIM Missionaries, or Siberia for Christ.
