Leonard "Boomer" Carlson

March 19, 1925 — January 7, 2016

Leonard Frank "Boomer" Carlson, 90 of Red Wing, died peacefully Thursday, January 7, 2016 at his home in Wacouta Township. Boomer was born on March 19, 1925 at home in Hastings to Frank and Adoline (Dunkel) Carlson. He started school at Guardian Angels until his family moved to a farm in 1937. He continued his schooling at "Etter Tech" a one-room school through 8th grade. He was inducted into the service during World War II on February 26, 1945. After serving in various locations in the United States he received an honorable discharge on January 1, 1947. He returned to Hastings and met Joan Thygesen in Red Wing. They were married on June 2, 1951. They raised two children Gary and Mary Jo. He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad as a signalman and foreman for 37 years. They moved to Wacouta Township in 1975. He was a member of United Lutheran Church and the Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54. Throughout his life he enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, bowling, and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Joan; one son, Gary Carlson; one daughter, Mary Jo (Bryan) Trandem; four grandchildren, Michelle Carlson, Melanie (Eric) Smith, Kienan Trandem (Karen Gergen) and Linnea Trandem (David Lewis-Frazier); one great granddaughter, Chloe Smith; seven brothers, John (Rita), Ray (Ruth), Charles (Sherrie), Richard (Irma), Ronald, Keith (Rose) and Jerome (Sharon) Carlson as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Grace Carlson; sisters, Marie Prentice and Frances Hicks; and brother, Allen Carlson.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2016 at United Lutheran Church with Reverend Justin Boeding officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at the Wacouta Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service.
