Lawrence Vern Prince

July 27, 1929 — February 20, 2019

Lawrence Vern Prince, age 89 of Rochester passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 20, 2019 from pneumonia complications at St. Mary's hospital, surrounded by loving family.

Larry was born July 27, 1929 in Hibbing, Minnesota, son of Milton and Irene (Laydon) Prince. He graduated from Hibbing High School, spent 3 years driving heavy equipment at the Crete Mining Company in Hibbing before he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. His military assignment was in conjunction with the Manhattan Project at the nuclear testing site in Nevada driving heavy equipment. Upon discharge he returned to Hibbing and married Mildred (Mickey) Laine on May 29, 1954. Upon graduation from UMD he began his 34 year teaching career which took him to Fosston, Chisolm, Red Wing, Rochester Central Junior High and finally Willow Creek Junior High. During his career he earned his Masters Degree in Education from the University of MN. All those years he thoroughly enjoyed teaching 7th and 8th grade English.

He loved camping and fishing in Northern Minnesota. Spent many summers driving across the country visiting dear friends and family. If times were quiet you would always find him reading, as he was an insatiable reader. Larry was a longtime member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and spent enumerable hours volunteering with ArcSE MN.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mickey; 3 children: Kathy (Larry) Peterson of Seattle, WA, Jeff (Deb Livergood) Prince of Frenchville, PA and Judy Prince of Rochester; 4 grandchildren: Michael (Melanie) Peterson, Tiffany (Jess) Jasper, Johanna Prince, Adam (Riley) Prince; 9 great grandchildren: Thomas, Ashley, Sara, Jillian, Emily, Nathen, Abby, Samantha, Lincoln, as well as many very special nieces, nephews and extended family friends Kathy and Jerry Hanson, Sarah and Amy Monson, Lynnea Lehmeier, and JoAnn and Bill Lawler. He will be profoundly missed, but his memory will live on forever in those who were fortunate enough to be a part of his life.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Elodie, brother-in-law Ollie, and special family friend Rachel Mann.

Visitation will be held from 5pm to 8pm Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Mahn Family Funeral Home in Rochester. The funeral will be held at 11am Thursday, Feb 28, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church with Pastor Karna Hagen Moskalik officiating.
