Lawrence R. Harkins age 84 of Lake City passed away March 25, 2008 at the Lake City Hospital Mayo Health System.

Larry was born June 26, 1923 in St. Paul, MN to Raymond & Chlotilda (Bernhardt) Harkins. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Lake City in 1942. He joined the Navy in 1943; he was attached to the 9th Special Seabees and was stationed in the South Pacific, Soloman Islands, Bougainville, Guadalcanal and Green Island during WW II. He was discharged in 1945. After being discharged he returned to Lake City and worked as an Apprentice Plumber for his uncle Frank Brettschnieder. On October 25, 1947 he married Virginia Pinski in St. Paul, MN. In 1953 he purchased his uncles plumbing business and formed Harkins Plumbing and Heating. In 1983 Larry sold the business to the family and continued working at the shop until 2005. His wife Virginia passed away September 12, 2005. Larry was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake City, Knights of Columbus, Lake City Country Club, Lake City American Legion Post 110 and Life Member of VFW Post 8729. He also was a former member of the Lake City Lion's Club and a League Bowler.

Larry is survived by six children, Carol (Robert) Hoffmann of San Antonio, TX, Nancy (Raymond) Daniels of Monument, CO, Thomas (Margery) Harkins of Lake City, Robert (Linda) Harkins of Savage, MN, James (Rhonda) Harkins of Lake City, Betty Harkins Plymouth, MN; 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a infant brother, Robert.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 28, 2008 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake City at 11:00 am with Father James Russell officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lake City. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 8 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel Lake City. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church. Military rights will be by Lake City VFW Post 8729 and American Legion Post 110.
