Lawrence "Larry" Carrington

March 10, 1936 — September 16, 2017

Lawrence John Carrington, 81, of Hager City, Wis., passed away peacefully in his home on September 16, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Graceville, Minn. on March 10, 1936, the son of Florence (Ehrnst) and Lawrence Keith Carrington. Larry was the oldest of 10 children and is survived by all of his siblings. Larry graduated from Graceville High School in 1954 and joined the United States Army. He was stationed in Alaska and when off-duty enjoyed downhill skiing and fishing. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Larry earned an accounting degree from the Minneapolis School of Business while employed as an accountant for United Truck Leasing. In 1973, Larry and his family moved from Saint Louis Park, Minn. to Red Wing when he purchased Kingsbury Transfer. He owned and operated Carrington Transportation for many years. Two years after moving to Red Wing, he purchased two additional trucking companies, Skyline Express in Duluth, Minn. and SLX in Bemidji, Minn. He operated those two companies with his brothers-in-laws, Richard Eisenmenger and Wayne Marcus. Larry later sold his trucking companies and was employed in the Sales Department of Mack Trucks of Rochester. In December 1992, Larry became Deputy Registrar for the License Center in Red Wing. Sandy and Larry remain owners of that business with their daughter, Michele.

Larry loved a good martini or "bump" of Matusalem Rum, enjoyed a wide variety of music from classical to country, appreciated beautiful crystal, fine china and gourmet food. He and Sandy were the original members of not one, but two gourmet food groups in Red Wing. The source of many good stories!

Larry was an avid fisherman, hunter and NRA supporter. He owned a tree farm, better known as the Deer Camp in Bear River, a place he called, "a little bit of heaven." When Larry fell 35 feet from his deer stand, Bill, Larry's very special nephew, was there to save his life. Thanks Bill, for giving us 23 more years with our Larry. Bill and Teresa Lorimer now own that little bit of heaven.

With his G.I. bill, Larry earned several advanced pilot ratings (private, commercial and instrument), and together, he and his licensed co-pilot Sandy flew side-by-side on many adventures, including landing at restricted air field while on a flight to the Bahamas. Larry and Ronnie Tesdall owned planes together and their strong friendship continued to this day.

Larry loved playing in the dirt with his John Deere tractor and Caterpillar bulldozer. It was always important to have someone watching while he was running his equipment just in case of a potential mishap like driving over the side of the bluff on his Mississippi back channel home. He loved the Green Bay Packers and all things Republican.

After transitioning his deer camp to Bill and Teresa, Larry and Sandy purchased their legacy lake home on Bone Lake, Wis. in 2013. We look forward to creating more great stories and toasting to Larry around the campfire, surrounded by dragonflies (for more information about the dragonfly project, go to www.dragonflyproject.org).

Larry is survived by Sandra, his wife of fifty-six years, his children, Kristi Carrington (Tom Schneider), Michele (Rick) Moskwa, Melissa (Paul) Carrington-Irwin. His grandchildren include Jonathan "JT" Schneider, Matthew and Cori Fairbanks, Zack (Abby) Moskwa, Jake Moskwa, and Dixon and Mackenzie Irwin. His great grandchildren include Connor, Logan and Kennley Moskwa. He was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Danielle Schneider.
