LaVina Marie McKinley

June 24, 1925 — February 17, 2016

LaVina Marie (Hague) McKinley, age 90, died peacefully on February 17, 2016 at Atrium Post Acute Care in Ellsworth.
LaVina was born the daughter of Horace and Carrie (Gilbertson) Jennings on June 24, 1925. She attended the Warrentown Grade School and the Maiden Rock High School. Growing up in the depression gave her an appreciation of hard work and taught her that family and friendships were the most important things in life.
She married Ralph Hague in April 1943. They farmed in Salem Township where they raised their children. In 1973, they sold the family farm and moved to Elderwood Heights near Hager City. Ralph passed away in July of 1974.
In July of 1976 LaVina married David McKinley. They built a home in Salem Township and moved to Red Wing, Minn. after David's retirement.
In her early years LaVina worked as a waitress when her parents owned a café in Maiden Rock. She raised their children and helped on the family farm. In the years to follow she worked at the Maiden Rock Grade School and Ellsworth High School lunchrooms. With her best friend Delores Greske they formed a business "The PaperMates" and worked side by side for many years painting and wallpapering people's homes. LaVina would spend days decorating and cooking preparing for Christmas as she would entertain several groups of people during the holidays. She was a member of Heartland Methodist Church and had a heart for caring for people in their time of need and used this gift as an extended outreach of her faith in God.
LaVina is survived by her sons, Delmont (Janet) Hague of Hager City and Ron (Jill) Hague of Ellsworth; her daughter, Lila (Larry) Hilden; step sons, Dave Jr. (Sue) McKinley of Rosemount and Jim (Darlene) McKinley of Apple Valley; step daughter in law, Lois (Paul) McKinley of Farmington; sister, Leona Gerdes of Wabasha; 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; her brothers, Forrest and Gordon Jennings; grandson, Aaron Hilden and step son, Paul McKinley.
Celebration of life will be 1 p.m. Sunday, February 21, 2016 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, Red Wing with Rev. Luke McKinley officiating. Burial will be at Maiden Rock Cemetery. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
