LaVerne Thompson's precious Lord took her hand and led her home to Heaven September 17, 2015.
LaVerne Emma Bertha (Roth) Thompson was born in Winona County on October 29, 1922 to Amanda Beilke Roth and Edwin John Roth. As a child, her family moved to Rochester where she attended Trinity Lutheran School and graduated from Rochester High School. She married Willard "Bill" Thompson and they started their life together in a tiny cabin at the Silver Lake Trailer Court. They shared a love for travel and spontaneous adventures. Early in their marriage, LaVerne and Bill lived in various locations along the Pacific coast. The Northwest captured a very special place in her heart. They returned there many times after moving to Plainview, Minnesota to establish a HVAC business. Together, they raised six children who have subsequently blessed them with twenty-one grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. After Bill's death in 1990, LaVerne relocated to Red Wing. She enjoyed living along the Mississippi River but chose to spend the final year of her life living just blocks from where she grew up in Rochester.
LaVerne was a very unique individual. She had an engaging personality, always showing great kindness and concern for others. She freely expressed her appreciation for her family, friends and healthcare providers. Despite the challenges posed by her illness, she remained optimistic and kept her endearing sense of humor. While LaVerne enjoyed big adventures, she also delighted in life's simple pleasures, especially those that were unplanned or unexpected. She recognized and appreciated things that go unnoticed by many people. LaVerne was an avid reader and knowledgeable about many subjects, including current events. She cared deeply about her community.
LaVerne was blessed to be survived by her children, Winston of Anacortes WA, Linda Thompson of Anacortes WA, Larry (Carol Patterson) of Scottsdale AZ, Cheryl (Dave) Walsh of Summerville OR, Susan (James) Sievers of Rochester, and Brenda Loewen of Red Wing MN. She is also survived by her sisters, Alice Coggins of Rochester and Esther (Roger) Price of White Bear Lake MN; and her sister-in-law, Mildred Roth, and brother-in-law, Darwin Dingfelder both of Rochester. Grandchildren include: Jenny Thompson, Geoffrey Thompson, William Schneider, Ryan Schneider, Sarah Hanson, Virginia Johnson, Katherine Pollock, Kevin Pollock, Michael Thompson, Elissa Thompson, Andrew Thompson, Heather Howard, Phillip Walsh, Clinton Walsh, Casey Gottschalk, Daniel Malwitz, Holly Roesler, Anastasia Justin, Robert Loewen, Matthew Loewen, Amanda Loewen, and Alexander Loewen. She is also survived by fifteen great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and her beloved cat, Sammy.
She was preceded in death by her husband and his siblings/spouses, her parents; her sister Leida Dingfelder, her brothers Arnold Roth and Sydney (Margaret) Roth, and brother-in-law Jack Coggins.
