LaVerne Paul Smith

November 13, 1936 — June 20, 2019

Smith, L.P. (LaVerne Paul) November 13, 1936 - June 20, 2019. His Celebration of Life will be from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm on Sunday, September 1, 2019 at Oasis Church in Rochester, MN. The interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in River Falls, WI.

Born and raised in Hastings, MN, L.P. attended high school at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, MN where he met his future wife Delores Sieber. They were married October 12, 1957 in River Falls, WI. L.P. graduated from Dunwoody Industrial Institute and worked for IBM as an engineer for 30+ years. During this time they lived in Wisconsin, New York and Montana before returning to Minnesota.

L.P. had a passion for riding motorcycles, camping and hiking throughout the U.S., along with boating, water skiing, computers and weekly coffee with other IBM retirees. In the 80s he loved to run with his husky Mandy as they picked up trash along the way to keep the outdoors clean. He was a long-term blood donor. For many years he piloted the pontoon boat during the annual Church corn feed hosted by their best friends Natalie and Al. He helped build schools and churches in Haiti and worked behind the scenes on various projects, helping others and preferring not to get attention for his efforts. For their 50th anniversary, L.P. and Delores chose to skip the typical party and instead camped in The Grand Tetons and Yellowstone with their children and grandchildren. He was known as GLP by his grandchildren which they say stood for "grandpa loves pepsi" even though he was an avid coke drinker. He loved to tease his grandchildren and they teased him in return.

Preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Helen Smith. Survived by wife Delores (Sieber) Smith, son Bryant Smith and his wife Lisa, daughter Brenda (Smith) Galvan and her husband John, grandchildren Patrick Galvan, Kyle Smith, Amber Galvan and Hannah Smith. Also survived by siblings Joanne, Richard, Ruth, Tom and Jerry.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) or give the gift of life and donate blood at the American Red Cross in his honor. Online condolences are welcome and may be written at mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
