Laverne E. Reisner

Laverne Everett Reisner, 82, of Red Wing, passed away July 31, 2009, following a short illness with cancer. He was born January 20, 1927 to Everett and Laura (Rothmeyer) Reisner, on a farm near Hawkeye, Iowa. Laverne attended school at Hawkeye and was raised on a farm near West Union. He served in the United States Army between April 1945 and November 1946, spending 13 months in Japan, attaining the rank of Tech 5. On September 7, 1950, he was united in marriage at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union, Iowa to Donna Lou Harris. To this union, their three children were born. He farmed most of his life, first in the Postville and Cascade areas in Iowa. Then he and his family moved to Minnesota in 1970, where they settled on a farm near Red Wing, where he worked until he retired in 1992. Laverne was an active member of First Covenant Church in Red Wing.

Surviving him are his wife, Donna of rural Red Wing; sons, Dennis (Karen) of Fountain, MN and David (Danny Sue) of Goodhue, MN; daughter, Diane (Jessi) Hammel of Stewartville, MN; 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Etta (Mrs. John) Gage of West Union, IA and brother, Dale (Mary) Reisner of Traer, IA.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Gene in 1934 and Donald in 1975; his parents and his granddaughter, Ronda Reisner in 1983.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 14, 2009 at the First Covenant Church with Reverend Timothy Anderson officiating. Private burial with military honors will be at Hope Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Todd and Jason Hammel, Peggy Moran, Penny Seifert, Tara O'Bryne, Crissie Grove, and Chad, Shanna and Spring Reisner. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to First Covenant Church or the American Cancer Society.
