L. Phil Larsen

November 11, 1974 — September 27, 2012

On September 27, 2012, L. Philip Larsen, born November 11, 1974, lost his five-year battle with pancreatic cancer at home, surrounded by his family. Phil was a devoted husband and father whose unique sense of humor made an impression on everyone who met him. He was 37 years old.

Phil grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana and attended Broad Ripple High School, class of 1993. He started his collegiate career at the University of Kansas and became a brother in Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He transferred to Purdue University his junior year where he graduated with a BS in Communications and Meteorology. In West Lafayette, at the Episcopal Campus Ministry, he had the good fortune to meet his wife, Elizabeth (Moore) Larsen. While Elizabeth finished her undergraduate degree in nursing, they pursued a long-distance relationship as Phil was the chief meteorologist at WOAY-TV in Beckley, West Virginia. Phil and Elizabeth were married in Lafayette, Indiana in June 2002, and moved to Rochester, Minnesota where Elizabeth continued her nursing career at Mayo Clinic. With limited opportunities to be a meteorologist in southeastern Minnesota, Phil tried his hand at several other professions.

Phil was an avid golfer who scored a hole-in-one his junior year of high school. He loved cycling and participated in multiple charity bike rides for Get Your Guts in Gear after his diagnosis with Crohn's disease in 1997. Phil's fanaticism for the Purdue Boilermakers was unrivaled. As his cancer progressed, Phil embraced social media in dealing with his disease and demonstrated great strength and humor, as evidenced by his CaringBridge site.

Phil is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Larsen, their son Charlie, and constant four-legged companion Lenny of Rochester; parents Chuck and Babs Larsen of Rochester; sister Amber Backhaus (husband Christopher Backhaus and son Andrew); two aunts, Emily Huntington and Janet Harrington; and eight cousins. Phil was preceded in death by grandparents Earl and Suzanne Larsen, and Fred and Barbara Huntington.

A celebration of Phil's life will be held on Friday, October 5, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church (1884 22nd Street NW in Rochester). Visitation at 10:00, service at 11:00, followed by a church luncheon.
