Kermit David Voy

October 16, 1930 — March 18, 2014

Kermit David Voy, 83, of Rochester passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at his Madonna Towers home surrounded by his family.

A son of David and Alice (Stauffacher) Voy, Kermit was born near Ackley, Iowa on October 16, 1930. He grew up on the family farm, and graduated from Sheffield High School in 1950. He was a graduate of the Iowa State University Class of 1958, and pursued additional graduate study in agronomy.

Kermit married Maxine Louise Daub in Sheffield, Iowa on June 25, 1954. They lived in Osage, Iowa for 12 years after college, raising seven children. Kermit was a Soil Scientist for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in the north central counties of Iowa for over 30 years, serving many of those years as team leader. He wrote the Soil Survey manuscripts for each county the team mapped. During this time, Kermit also purchased farmland in Howard and Mitchell Counties.

In 1970, Kermit transferred to Hampton, Iowa, where he continued working with the USDA. In Hampton, Kermit served as church chairman, deacon, and adult Sunday School teacher at Faith Baptist Church for many years.

Kermit also served on the Hampton Library Board, was a member of Kiwanis and Toastmasters, served as judge for the Hampton High School Soil judging contests and wrote numerous professional articles on soil and water quality.

After retiring from the Soil Survey in 1988, Kermit became an independent Soil Classifier, and served as president of the Iowa Soil Classifiers of America division. He also served as the Franklin County sanitarian, issuing well permits.

Kermit and Maxine celebrated their 50th anniversary with a church reception for friends and family in June 2004. After living in Hampton, Iowa, for 34 years, they moved to Rochester, Minnesota in 2004. As a faithful and loving husband, and a dedicated and loving father, he loved to read, sing, and spend time with his family. He and Maxine were married for nearly 60 years.

Kermit is survived by his loving wife, Maxine; sister, Iva Heki; sons, David (Magdalena), Douglas, and Duane (Karen) Voy; daughters, Denise (Mark) Tompkin, Deanne (Larry) Willman, and Debra (Ron) Johnson; 17 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter, and a host of other family and friends.
