Kenneth L. Helmer

October 18, 1931 — August 20, 2015

Kenneth Lamoine Helmer, 83, of Red Wing, died Thursday, August 20, 2015 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. He was born October 18, 1931, in Prescott Wis., to Cecil and Edna (Bauerkemper) Helmer. He graduated from Prescott High School in 1951 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps that same year. He served during the Korean Conflict until he was honorably discharged in 1953. On October 29, 1954 he married Joan Mischke at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing where the couple made their home. In 1959, they moved to Hager City. Ken worked for Tomfohr Implement and Behrens Auto Supply. Following his retirement, he worked part time at the Republican Eagle. He and Joan moved back to Red Wing in 2002. Ken was a member of First Lutheran Church where he ushered for 52 years, the Marine Corps League and the Bay City American Legion, Post 357. He also worked with Toys for TOTs for many years. He enjoyed gardening, working in his shop on small engines, and in his younger years, leather working. He also enjoyed going to auctions and tractor shows.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; two children, Deb (Joe) Cemensky of Shoreview and Bryan (Melinda) of Red Wing; three grandchildren, Curtis (Breanna) Helmer, Adam Connelly and Angie Connelly; three great grandchildren, Oliver, Devin and Madeline; three siblings, Leon (Carole) Helmer of DeForest, Wis., Darlene (Millard) Anderson of Spring Valley, Wis. and Marilyn Schroeder of Ellsworth; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by one brother, Darold Helmer and his parents.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Monday, August 24, 2015, at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Arthur Sharot officiating. Burial will be at Trenton Cemetery with military honors provided by the Bay City American Legion, Post 357. A visitation will be from 2 - 5 p.m., Sunday, August 23, 2015 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the service at church. Memorials are preferred to Toys for TOTS or the church.
