Kenneth E. Edstrom, 85, of Pine Island, died Monday, February 6, 2012 at Pine Haven Care Center. He was born on May 2, 1926, in Hibbing, the son of Edward and Sylvia (Stenbeck) Edstrom. He graduated from Toivola High School. After high school, Ken joined the US Marine Corps. and served his country in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he attended college at Northwestern University studying chemical engineering. On June 10, 1950, he married Katherine Horvath in Elmer. They made their home in Chicago, Cincinnati, Rochester and in 1963 moved to Pine Island. Ken worked for IBM and later opened Pine Plating Company Inc. in Pine Island in 1961. He was very active in the community serving terms as the mayor and member of the Pine Island school board. Ken was an avid golfer and was instrumental in helping start the Pine Island Golf Course. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. He was a very creative card player and loved the game of cribbage.
Ken is survived by his children, Ken (Marty Gentry) Edstrom of Springfield, MO., Bob (Melissa Quinn) Edstrom of Cambridge, Donna (Mark) Hanson of Rochester and Sandy (Scott) McMillan of Edina; grandchildren, Ann Marie (Chad) Herman, Tom (Kristy) Edstrom, Michael Edstrom, Kate Edstrom, James Edstrom, Rob (Nicole) McMillan and Matt McMillan; great-grandchildren, Hayley, Jadyn, Taylor, Londyn, Mason, Kinslea, Kolton; siblings, Audrey Olson of Eau Claire, WI., Doris LaFreniere of Hibbing, Cliff (Dorothy) Edstrom of Pine Island; many nieces and nephews.
Ken was preceded in death by his beloved wife Katherine; grandchildren, Jodie, Stephen, Lauryn and John Edstrom; sister, Irene Edstrom.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Friday, February 10, 2012 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Pine Island with Father Randal Kasel presiding. Burial will be in the Pine Island Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Mahn Family Funeral Home- Mahler Chapel.
