Kenneth Frank Detlefsen, 77, of Red Wing, died Saturday at Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis. He was born September 25, 1930 in Manchester, Iowa to Frank and Ruth (Main) Detlefsen. He graduated from South St. Paul High School in 1948. He worked as a telegrapher for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He joined the US Army in 1952 and was honorably discharged in 1954. On June 30, 1955 he married Laverne Boesel and they lived in Eagan. He attended Veterinary School at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1962. Upon graduating, they moved to Red Wing, where he became a part owner of the Hiawatha Valley Veterinary Clinic and later started the Bluffs Pet Clinic and retired from the practice in 2001. He was a member of United Lutheran Church and St. Andrew Church in Las Vegas, where they spent their winters.
He is survived by his wife, Laverne of Red Wing; two children, Anne (Jack) Detlefsen Antonio of Harmony, Minn., and William (Sheri) Detlefsen of Red Wing; five grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Wm LeRoy "Roy" (Dolores) Detlefsen of Mission, Texas, Rev. Deane (Shirley) Detlefsen of Pembroke, Ontario and Paul (Barb) Detlefsen of West St. Paul; an uncle, Paul Main of Coggon, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at United Lutheran Church with Reverend Randy Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jeffrey, Dr. Glenn and Joel Detlefsen, Jon Sell, Todd Volkman and Jason Bjork. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Memorials preferred to the church or donor's choice. Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
