ROCHESTER Katherine Wahlenmaier, 92, of Rochester, died Tuesday (Sept. 14, 2010) at Samaritan Bethany Home on Eighth.
Katherine Bernard was born March 3, 1918 in Chatfield, MN to Earl and Dorothy (Vehrenkamp) Bernard. She graduated from Chatfield High School in 1936 and attended the Kahler School of Nursing, graduating in 1940. She was a private duty nurse before joining the Mayo Medical Unit of the US Army Medical Corps, serving during World War II in New Guinea in the Pacific theater. After her discharge in 1943 she worked as a nurse at the Tacoma General Hospital in Tacoma, WA. She married William Wahlenmaier, they were later divorced. Katherine moved to Rochester where she worked in home health care. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and was an avid Twins fan.
Survivors include her sister, Maxine Coppe, of Rochester; her daughter-in-law, Jessie Wahlenmaier, and two grandsons, Jacob, and Joel, all of Everett, WA. Her son Karl, her sister Valetta Sparks, and her brother Melvin Bernard, preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Inurnment will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
