Katherine "Kate" Kirkwood, 94, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Mayo Clinic-St. Mary's Campus in Rochester, Minn. 

Kate was born on July 6, 1930, the twelfth and last child of Claus and Maria (Augustine) Sprick, on the family farm in West Albany Township, Minn. When she was young, her family moved to Lake City where she lived the rest of her life. She graduated in 1947 from Lincoln High School in Lake City. In her early 20s, she met an Army veteran, Charles (CJ) Kirkwood, also of Lake City, and they wed on July 5, 1952. Kate and CJ raised four amazing children and resided in Lake City their entire lives. Kate loved her family, friends, and hometown of Lake City. She enjoyed golfing, gardening, playing cards, watching Jeopardy, and following all of the Minnesota sports teams. Being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great joy!

She is survived by four children, Sandra Turner of Montgomery, Texas; Joe (Barb) Kirkwood of Lake City; Jane (Ted) Hagberg of Peoria, Ariz., and John Kirkwood of Lake City; grandchildren, Paul (Jessie) Turner of McGregor, Texas; Kelly (Cam) Lipe of Conroe, Texas; Jeff (Tracy) Halverson of Crosslake, Minn.; Teddy (Amanda) Hagberg of St. Paul, Minn., and Katie (Marque) Hurd of Chandler, Ariz.; great-grandchildren Natalie Bodle, Hailey Halverson, Ariana Lopez, Thea Hagberg and Jaylen Hurd; a sister, Florence Bye of Maplewood, Minn., and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her older siblings Adelaide, Edward, Leroy, Annette, Emma, Clarence, Anna, Marion, Alverna and Elmer; her husband Charles, and daughter-in-law Sheila Kirkwood.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mahn Family Funeral Home in Lake City, and will also be held one hour before the service at the church.
