Karl Klaus Tombarge

March 25, 1920 — September 18, 2013

Karl Klaus Tombarge, 93, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at the Red Wing Health Center. He was born March 25, 1920, in Chester, Minnesota, to Klaus and Anne (Grabow) Tombarge. His family moved to Daisy, North Dakota when he was a young boy and he attended schools there. He was united in marriage to Jane Staehli on June 20, 1940. From December of 1944 until September of 1946, he served in the US Army during WWII. He and Jane lived in Lake City for 8 years before moving to the Burnside area in Red Wing. Karl was employed with the Minnesota Department of Transportation for 34 years, retiring in 1982. For the past 5 years, he has resided at Deer Crest in Red Wing. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54, and the Redmen Club. Karl's pastimes included playing horseshoes-he was a "ringer" and had won many trophies throughout the years; woodworking, gardening and dancing. Most of all, Karl enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Jane; 3 daughters, Mary Linder of Red Wing, Mavis Naseth of Lake Elmo and Karen (Dale) Fabian of St. Charles; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-great-grandchildren and special family friends, Lois Sommerfield and her daughter, Kitty.
He was preceded in death by 4 brothers, 6 sisters and 2 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday, September 23, 2013 at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Greg Strunk officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Burnside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. with a 5 p.m. Legion prayer service on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
