Karen Dorothy Sommerfield, 61, of Zumbro Falls, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at her home. She was born on April 12, 1949 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to William and Marion (Dahlin) Hren. She grew up in Milwaukee and then married John Valeriano. They later divorced. The family moved to Lake City in 1980. She married Harold Sommerfield on June 8, 1981 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They lived in the Lake City area. A member of the Basset Buddies Rescue, she had a passion for rescuing dogs and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, Nathaniel, Austin and Ryan.
Survivors include her husband, Harold; three daughter, Nicole (Jeff) Bohler of Lake City, Leanne Valeriano and Melissa Valeriano both of Rochester; four sons, James (Brenda) Sommerfield of Mankato, Jeff (Marci) Sommerfield of Millville, Mark (Michelle Barber) Sommerfield of Austin and Tom Sommerfield of Berlin, Connecticut; 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorials are preferred to Basset Buddies Rescue Organization, Small Dog Rescue of Minnesota, or any animal rescue organization. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel in Lake City.
