Karen LeAnn Collins, 72, of Red Wing, died Thursday, January 10, 2013 at her home. She was born on September 7, 1940 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin to Arthur and Merle (Kerry) Gabus. She graduated in 1958 from Eau Claire Memorial High School. She attended Fresno State for one year and two years at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She married Michael Collins. For one year they lived in Marshall, Wisconsin and then in 1962 moved to Red Wing. She worked for 30 plus years as a swim instructor at the YMCA and for the Red Wing Schools, retiring in 1998. She was a member of United Lutheran Church where she was active in the Esther circle. She enjoyed quilting, reading, walking and swimming. Her family recalls how she enjoyed attending her grandchildren's events and going to the family cabin near Danbury, Wisconsin.
Survivors include her husband, Michael of 52 years; two children, Pat (Cheryl) Collins of Prior Lake and Meg (Michael) Christianson of Cottage Grove; four grandchildren, Alexandra and Brandon Collins and Marit and Mack Christianson; two sisters, Julie (Kerry) Craft of Madisonville, Louisiana and Garrett Gabus of Eau Claire; one brother, Mark Gabus of Idaho and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Amy.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at United Lutheran Church with Rev. Steve Timm officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, January 14, 2013 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
