Dr. Jule Block, 81, a longtime Rochester Optometrist, died Sunday (Dec. 16, 2012) at the Shorewood Senior Campus.
Julius Lyle Block was born Aug. 1, 1931 in Minneapolis to Julius Herman and Celia E. (Renneke) Block. He was raised in Le Sueur, MN and graduated from Le Sueur High School as Salutatorian of his class in 1949. During High School he was known for his scholarship and athleticism, mainly basketball and baseball. He moved to Rochester and attended Rochester Junior College in Dr. Charles Sheard's ophthalmic optics course. On Aug. 14, 1954 he married Marian Velleu in Rochester, she survives. He then graduated from the Chicago College of Optometry with a degree as a Doctor of Optometry. After serving two years in the US Army as a First Lieutenant at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, CO, the couple moved to Rochester where he joined an optometric office with Dr. David Welte and remained there for the rest of his career. He was loved by all of his patients and the staff he employed. He was very involved in the Rochester YMCA from working in early fund raising activities to serving as Board President twice. He was active in sports there especially excelling in Handball, and receiving the "Layman of the Year" award in 1974. He was a charter member of the Sertoma 700 Club of Rochester, having served as president in 1967 - 1968, and a member of the Congregational Church. Jule was a great outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hunting, and mowing grass.
Survivors include his wife, his son, Dr. J. R. (Lisa) Block of Chaska, MN; his daughter, Susan (David) Richter of Eden Prairie, MN; grandchildren, Lindsay and Jason Block, and Mark Richter; and his sister, Clare (Robert) Haugen of Burnsville, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family would like to extend a very special thank you all of the staff of Seasons Hospice.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 29, 2012) at the Congregational Church.
Friends may call one hour before the service at the church and a reception will be held immediately following the service.
