Judith Miller

Rochester- Judith Lanz Miller, 73, of Rochester passed away Thursday March 10th, 2016 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester MN following a lengthy illness.
Judy was born September 27th, 1942 - "the year Columbus sailed the ocean blue", in Mandan ND. She is the daughter of Rosemary Lanz (Rambur) and William Lanz Sr.
In Judy's 28 year career as Executive Director of Women's Shelter in Rochester she had many accomplishments until her retirement in 2009. Judy started the first transitional housing program in 1984 for battered women and their children in the State of MN. Judy's work in creating a coordinated criminal justice response in Olmsted County around domestic assault helped Rochester win the All American Cities award in 1988. Judy also created the first battered women shelter in MN in 1993 that worked specifically with immigrant battered women. In 1994 Judy created the first K-5 school program inside a battered women's shelter.
Judy Miller worked closely with many public figures in her career, such as, Senator Paul and Sheila Wellstone, Governor Rudy Perpich, Representative Dave Bishop, and many local City Council and County Board members.
Judy Miller worked tirelessly to further the rights and protection of battered women and their children.
Judy's retirement included her intricate beaded art, political debating, and her close relationships with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Judy also enjoyed a "second family" at Riverbend Assisted Living where she lived until her death. The staff and friends she met there meant everything to her.
Judy Miller is survived by her daughters; Pamela (Ron Robertson) Ostboe of Tempe AZ and Suzie Christenson of Rochester; a son, Michael (Nancy) Miller of Spanaway WA; four granddaughters; Melissa (Jeff) Wilsco and Megan Miller of Spanaway WA, Ahna and Kate Christenson of Rochester; two great-grandchildren Briahna and Justin Wilsco; and her former son-in-law Roni (Ann) Christenson of Albert Lea.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Chamberlin; her parents and eight of 12 siblings.
Memorials may be directed to the Rochester Seasons Hospice or Riverbend Assisted Living in Rochester.
A private family memorial service for Judy will be held at a later date.
